Hard drive is the primary storage device of a computer system. All the data on the computer along with the operating system is stored on the hard drive. If you are a Windows XP operating system user, you might have encountered situation in which the Windows fails to recognize the available disk space. For, example, suppose your hard drive has a capacity of 30 gigabyte, but according to Disk Management utility or Windows Explorer, you only have 2 GB of space in your hard drive. This may result in inaccessibility of the data saved on the hard drive resulting in vital data loss. However the data can be recovered using Windows data recovery software.

In this case, even though you have sufficient disk space, you get the error message that reads:

Low Disk Space. You are running out of disk space on

Possible Issues..

The root cause of this error message is that the Windows XP operating system is unable to recognize the available space of the hard drive.

Possible Solutions:

Following are the methods that one must follow in order to resolve the problem arises due to failure of the operating system to recognize the total available space in the hard drive:

  • Insert the Windows XP installation CD into the CD-ROM drive and restart the computer

  • After you get the start option from the CD, press any key to start

  • When you find the Windows XP Setup screen, press ENTER

  • Accept the End User License Agreement (EULA) by pressing F8

  • To install the Windows XP freshly without repairing, press ESC when you see the list of current Windows XP installations on your screen

  • You will receive the partition information on the Windows XP Setup screen. Note the partitioned and unpartitioned space and find if your available space is listed. Then, perform either of the following steps:

If all of your hard disk space is not listed, then you can conclude that the problem lies with the BIOS that is preventing the computer from recognizing your hard disk correctly

or
If all the hard disk space is listed, perform one of the following options:

  • To delete the partition, select the partition you want to delete and then press D

  • To create a new partition , select the unpartitioned space and then press C

The methods described above May require that you reinstall Windows XP there by results in loss of the data stored on the computer. It is thus recommended to take a backup of your data before conducting the above procedures. But many time it becomes impossible to take backup of your data. At this time, the Windows data recovery software turns out to be the best option to retrieve the lost data in the process.
