Disk Management Services Error When Converting Windows 2003 Disk to Dynamic Disk

Disk structure showing a track (A), a sector (...Image via Wikipedia

For a disk storage device, the subdivision of a track is called a sector that stores a fixed amount of data. Typically, magnetic storage media, like hard disk come formatted with general industry standard of 512-byte in sector size. However, disks up to 4,096 sector size are also available. In the context of basic disks used in Windows Server 2003, Microsoft suggests disks with 512-byte in sector size. The dynamic disks are found to be compatible only with disk using 512-byte sectors. When you encounter issues related to disk sector size, you might need to change disk sector size that causes data loss. Thus, data backup will be required to restore the lost data. But, if in case, no valid data backup is available, it is recommended to use an efficient data recovery utility that could locate and restore the data.

To illustrate such issues, consider that you use a Windows Server 2003 based computer. You try to use Diskpart utility to convert your MBR or GPT disk to dynamic disk. The operation fails and you receive the below error message:

The disk management services could not complete the operation”

When you attempt the disk conversion through the GUI, you come across below error message:

The operation did not complete. Check the System Event Log for more information on the error”

You cannot convert the disk even at subsequent attempts.

Cause

Such errors root from larger disk sector size. This occurs if disk sector size is larger than 512-bytes. Since Windows Server 2003 dynamic disk supports only 512-bytes sectors,if disk is using sectors that are larger than 512 bytes, it will fail to convert to dynamic.

Solution

To correct these problems, you need to reformat and recreate the disk using 512-bytes sector size. The process will provide several single volumes each of 2 TB in size.

After the process is done, you will need to restore lost data from backup, which if unavailable or invalid might create issues. To recover data om such conditions, you need to use a powerful data recovery software. Incorporated with high-end data searching algorithms, these data recovery products serve as valuable tools to scan, locate and restore lost data.

Why Data Recovery Software Must Have Product For Every Computer User ?

Windows Vista full Recycle Bin.Image via Wikipedia

Every day we are in front of our computers adding new information to it. It keeps on increasing and by the end of the month it becomes a huge data. It keeps on compiling till the day you are not able to boot the computer. You find out that the computer has crashed out and there is no way you can access your data.

What could be the reason – maybe a hardware malfunctioning, or a software problem. It could also be a virus attack. Sometimes accidental deletion is also a major cause of Data lost. Whatever may be the reason of Data Deletion, the first thing which comes into mind is recovery of the data as early as possible.

But the point is, can the lost data be recovered? Yes, it can be. For the reason, when your data gets deleted form the desk or the folder and then from the recycle bin, it does not get deleted permanently. Then where does it go? The deleted data gets stored in the hard drive of your computer. And when you run a Data Recovery Software, it recovers and restores the data from the hard drive and puts it back in front of you. That’s how a Data Recovery Software works.

But there are so many available in the market, branded and non – branded. How to choose which one suits your system best? The answer is very simple – the one which will run on your system smoothly, without much of nick-knacks. Maybe that’s a tough answer for many. Let me make it simple for you. First of all – throw away the idea of getting a local Data Recovery Software out of your mind. They do not give any guarantee for the results they produce; moreover your data is more precious than a cheap product which may cost you ten folds, if the results are not satisfactory.

Secondly, look for the one which can run on your Operating System. That means if you have Novell as the Operating System, then you should buy Novell Data Recovery Software. Or buy the one which runs on all kinds of Software. In addition to this, the Software should also be user friendly. It shouldn’t be something where you have to put all your mechanics, pop into books and then after a research of three and a half hours you are able to put the disk on run. Make sure the Data Recovery Software is something which you can run as easily as opening a can.

Third and most important thing, it should have a sound Tech Support, who can help you in case there is a problem – 24*5. A good tech support becomes a primary thing as it is the only support you can look for in odd hours.

Go for the branded one, like the ones which have been registered by ISO – International Organization for Standardization. It puts you at the cutting edge, making sure that the product you are going to buy will give you the best results, you are looking for.

So, for your own good, buy the best and leave the rest.

The data storage media might experience physical damage or failure. Hard drive contains a number of moving and sensitive internal components, such as read/write head, actuator arm, spindle motor, PCB (Printed Circuit Board) and disk controller. When these components gets damaged, the drive may become dead and it can not be accessed any more. In these cases, the stored data become inaccessible and you come across grave data loss situations.

The data and information is also venerable to virus infection. These malicious programs might damage system files of your computer and make the system unusable. Such data loss may also occur due to file system corruption, hard drive formatting, accidental deletion, operating system malfunction and many alike.

Windows 7 data recovery from backup in a snap

Recently, I loaded Windows 7 RTM on my laptop. I ran into an unexpected issue with BootMgr while installing, which reinforced the need for proper backups. Like all good IT soldiers, I did a complete system backup using the Windows 7 Create an Image Backup feature. I performed the backup to an external USB2 hard drive. The backup image gets created in .VHD format.

Windows 7 has several methods you can use to back up and restore data, including the Easy Transfer Wizard. If there are many customizations to retain, for example, the Easy Transfer Wizard may be your best option. In my opinion, browsing a backup image and just copying your files back is much quicker — at least for my purpose. I’ll show you how I did this in the steps below.

After loading Windows 7 on my laptop, I simply connected the external USB drive and browsed to the location of my VHD backup, as shown in Figure A. You can see from here:

Then, I selected the larger of the two volumes in which my data was stored (Figure B).

To access the backup data from the new system, you must take ownership of the object (Figure C). Here’s how to do it.

Right-click on the target file, select Properties, then the Security tab, and click Advanced.

Figure C

Click the Owner tab and then the Edit button (Figure D).

Select the new Owner account and click OK (Figure E).

Click OK in the resulting dialog box. Click OK until you see the operation completing (Figure F).

Now, go to Start | Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Computer Management and open Disk Management (Figure G).

From the Action menu, select Attach VHD. Browse to the image file and it will mount as if it were a local disk! Once your restores are complete, select Detach VHD from the Action menu.

It is a good idea to hold on to the image for a while in case you later realize you need access to data from the old image file.
