Startup Repair does not fix MBR Corruption in Windows Vista

MBR (Master Boot Record) is the first program that is executed by the system while booting up. It is a 512-byte structure and provides information like, bootstrapping data, hard disk primary partition table etc. When MBR gets corrupt, your system fails to boot and thus, you can’t access your data. In such situations, you need to reformat the hard drive and restore lost data from backup. However, if data backup is damaged, not updated, or absent, Data Recovery applications can be used for complete recovery purpose.

Consider a scenario, you start your Windows-Vista based system and it doesn’t boot up due to MBR corruption. After this, when you try to run Startup Repair tool using Windows Vista installation disc to correct MBR corruption, it doesn’t report any error.

Cause

It occurs when Startup Repair tool cannot detect the system partition correctly. If you have inserted a USB flash drive into the system and trying the boot the system, your computer hardware and System Repair tool might scan USB as the system partition. Due to this reason, corrupted MBR can’t be detected and hence, System Repair tool fails to report any error.

Solution

To correct the above behavior, you need to follow these steps in sequence:

  • Ensure that you have not inserted any USB into the system

  • Next, you should use Windows Recovery Environment to use Startup Repair tool or Bootrec.exe tool, To do so, you need to follow these steps:

1 Boot your system using Windows Vista installation disc

2 Select Repair your computer option and then select the operating system, you want to repair

3 You need to opt for Startup Repair tool to fix MBR corruption. If it fails, run Bootrec.exe tool using command prompt

  • If above measures fail to correct the existing problem, reformat your hard drive and restore lost data from backup. In case of backup issues, use data recovery software as the solution to recover lost information. These are perfect Data Recovery tools that provide you safe and automated recovery, concise documentation, advanced options and user-friendly interface. Such software proves to be powerful recovery tools in each logical data loss scenario.
