Error message during installation of Windows Vista

Windows VistaImage via Wikipedia

Windows Vista offers reliability, performance, security and manageability. But, data loss is not an exception with this operating system too. You may lose data because of common reasons like accidental file deletion, erroneous hard drive format, hard drive failure etc. Such situations require data recovery software as a solution, if data backup fails or is absent.

Consider a scenario, when you boot the system using the Windows Vista disk to install Vista, the following error message gets encountered:

“Windows is unable to find a system volume that meets its criteria for installation”

Windows Vista installation process gets halted with this error message. Also, you can’t select the hard disk partition for Windows Vista installation or it is not present in the listed partitions. In some cases, you may also fail to format hard disk partition or set its correct size.

Cause

The above error message occurs because of the following reasons:

  • Target partition is not active.

  • You don’t have latest drivers for the hard disk controller. It usually happens if you are upgrading to Windows Vista.

  • Hard disk issues, usually bad sectors

Solution

You can try these steps to recover from this issue:

  • Ensure that the target hard disk partition is set as Active. You can check Setupact.log file to determine if Windows Vista partition is Active. Locate the ‘DumpDiskInformation’ section, where end line of log entry should define the partition as Active. If it is not there, you can use diskpart.exe utility to set the required partition as Active.

  • Update the hard disk drivers to latest ones, if you are upgrading to Windows Vista

  • Use chkdsk utility to determine hard disk problems. Select Automatically fix file system errors’ and ‘Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors’ check boxes while running the utility. If the hard drive is physically crashed, you need to replace the hard drive. Consult data recovery service professionals to recover optimum data from the affected hard drive. It is the specialized component level help, where affected hard drives are treated with suitable technical processes to recover the lost data.

If hard drive is not damaged and all software level steps fail to solve the problem, you should go for a clean installation of Windows Vista operating system using diskpart.exe utility. To restore the lost data, use your recent data backup. If data backup is defective or is not available, opt for Data Recovery Tools to scan your affected hard drive to extract the lost information. These are unique tools that use advanced scanning algorithms to locate missing data from affected drives.
