VCU or Volume Copy Upgrade is a volume conversion tool that is provided with late versions of NetWare like NW6.5 Service Pack 7. It converts TFS (Traditional File System) volumes to NSS (Novell Storage Services) volumes.
The conversion is basically done for getting benefits of larger volume size, instant loading and updated tools. It can convert both user data as well as system metadata. It moves the traditional volume to NSS pool and all the files and directories of volume remain intact.
Although, VCU is useful for converting traditional volumes and getting advantages of advanced features of NSS but it also has some disadvantages and risks of data loss. These are as follows:
1 It is not “in-place” conversion of volumes. It needs free hard drive space for new NSS volume, equal to or larger than the size of data on traditional volume. It is just a copy utility and it doesn’t perform any conversion.
2 For traditional volumes, VCU doesn’t migrate deleted.sav folder and deleted files it holds to new NSS volume. Deleted files are basically purged. If you wanted to restore some files, you can not do it after conversion.
3 Converted NSS volume might get corrupted if other applications were accessing the volume during conversion.
In case of NSS volume corruption, you may face severe data loss problems. You need to go for Novell Recovery to overcome these issues.
An automated, easy, safe and quick Novell Partition Recovery needs powerful and highly developed third party Novell NetWare Recovery software. These software effectively scan your affected hard drive and extract as much data as possible from it.
